Throughout the years, one of the biggest battle in our society has been discrimination. Some of these problems included race, gender, religion, beliefs, appearance or things that makes one person different from another. Discrimination still exists today in our everyday life. One significant discrimination problem the world has todays, is in the workplace. Women, who are as equally trained and educated, and with the same experience as men are not getting equal pay. The American Association of University Women is releasing a new study that shows “when men and women attend the same kind of college, pick the same major and accept the same kind of job, on average, the woman will still earn 78 cents to every dollar that a man earns” This form of inequality is based on a belief from centuries ago that since men usually provide for women and women are “supposed” to take care of the house and children so therefore men are better at the jobs they do.
On a Sad gloomy rainy day, I was flipping through the list of colleges to apply to with my aunt and she told me “no matter how much education a women can get her salary will never be equal as the men who has the same amount of education and experience as the women”. She than explained to me how 3 years ago she worked at a private doctor office as an assistant. After working for 3 month another person got the same job as her and worked in the same office. My aunt was frozen as a statue when she found out that he was getting paid 45% more than what she currently was being paid. At time she did not understand why he was getting paid more than her when she had been there before him and had more experience at the job. She than decided to take the risk and talk to her boss about this issue. when she rushed into his office and sat down to talk she got so nervous that she could hear the clock go tick-tick-tick from the other side of the room. But she looked past her fears and spilled the truth about how she felt. Her mouth was than left open by the response she hear from her boss. He said that due to his gender he can handle more work given to him than woman can. My Aunt then decided to quit her job due to the gender inequality she faced.
There are amendments and laws supporting equal pay, yet results show that the gender wage gap still exists everywhere. The claim I make is more of a hope, a hope for women to keep on proving the decade old stereotypes to be false so they can someday be paid as equal as the men.
